The Rusty Bartender

Two types Of Hot Toddies

If your feeling under the weather or just want a nice drink for a nightcap then look no further than a hot toddy !

Basically a hot toddy is hot whiskey with added honey and lemon , sometimes with cloves added too. It definitely has medicinal properties , as honey and lemon are great for combating cold like symptoms plus the addition of alcohol helps numb the pain away!

I'm going to give you my go to recipe for when I'm feeling under the weather and then a variation on a hot toddy which uses gin instead of whiskey !

Dr Rustys Hot Toddy

The best medicine for colds and flu like symptoms in Dr Rustys opinion is a nice hot whiskey made with lemon and honey . I usually add a small pinch of cayenne pepper to spice things up.

Honey , lemon and whiskey are a match made in heaven and with the addition of a small pinch of cayenne pepper (which also has its own health benefits) it will help unclog your sinus plus gives the drink a lovely spicy kick.

Ingredients

2 oz. of your favorite whiskey

6 -8 oz. Hot water

Juice of half a lemon

1 bar spoon of honey

Method

Add all your ingredients in to your favorite mug and give it a good stir.

This to me is like a big hug in a mug. If a bowl of soup is comfort food then this is the cocktail equivalent .

Japanese Gin Toddy

Hot Gins have been popular for a very long time and its easy to see why . There is something so comforting about the smell of the botanicals from gin when it is warmed up.

Here i used a Japanese Roku Gin and i added wild hibiscus syrup and lemon , these flavors work so well with the warmed up gin and makes a really delicious drink .

Ingredients

1.5 oz Japanese gin

Juice of half a lemon

1 oz. Honey Syrup (1 part honey/ 1 part water)

0.5 oz. Wild Hibiscus Syrup

5 oz. hot water

Method

Method is simple add everything into a glass and stir. Garnish with lemon slice.
